Table of Contents

Preface. Explains the title of the book and the need of the hour for the People of God to get back to the Word of God.

Chapter 1. The importance of Scripture This chapter begins with a brief overview of the importance of the Bible as the Word of God, and why we believe it to be the Word of God. It majors on the fact, that for the last 20 years or more, many churches have neglected the Scriptures, and hence, important doctrines such as Biblical separation, the right use of Sunday etc. are in danger of being lost.

Chapter 2. Faith comes by hearing - why the public reading of Scripture is important.

Chapter 3. Public reading of Scripture in the Bible This chapter looks at a number of Old and New Testament instances of the public reading of Scripture.

Chapter 4. In the early Church Starting from the New Testament, I seek to draw on Church History to look at the public use of Scripture at that time.

Chapter 5. The different traditions As I am writing from a mainly Free Church and Anglican perspective, I consider some of the different ways various denominations treat Scripture , and the public reading of it.

Chapter 6. Using Scripture in worship This chapter continues from the previous chapter, and deals with more than just a straight Bible reading, considering numerous ways of using Scripture in worship.

Chapter 7. Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs Use of the Bible in hymns and worship songs - good theology

Chapter 8. Public Reading and Teaching go together At this point in the book it is necessary to emphasise that preaching and teaching etc. should always be linked to the public reading of Scripture. We shall look at what happens when this does, and does not take place.

Chapter 9. Scripture in pastoral care - the use of Scripture in all pastoral situations

Chapter 10. Preparation for the Reading of Scripture This chapter looks at ways of preparing to read Scripture, and the actual use of the voice. The preparation should be both practical and spiritual.

Chapter 11. Children and the Bible and the Family Altar In this chapter we look at early Sunday School Movements that sought to teach Scripture through memory verses and Sword Drill etc. We also consider how the modern Church has sold their children short by just simply telling the "God made the world, and God loves you." We shall look into the Bible to see how young people are encouraged to as simulate the Scriptures and the need to reinstate the Family Altar.

And Finally An up to date conclusion.
